Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Test (5 years and older)

Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Test (5 years and older). Allow 60 Minutes. Bulk Billed.

COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC HEARING TEST BATTERY

Bulk Billed with GP referral.  Service costs $300 with no referral.

This battery of tests gives the Audiologist the greatest scope to investigate your Hearing, Middle  Ear,  and Auditory System from the cochlear to the brainstem if required., It may be useful for differential diagnosis helping the GP or specialist zoom in on the cause your concerns and eliminate unlikely causes and provide the most appropriate treatment or management options.  The tests are covered in greater detail further on this page and in the rest of the services menu.  This protocol includes following tests where appropriate

(EXTENDED RANGE HEARING TEST AIR (250 Hz to 20000 Hz Testing the full range of human hearing not just the speech range) , BONE, SPEECH, TYMPANOMETRY and IPSI REFLEXES, OTOACOUSTIC EMMISSIONS (OAE),  Additional Cochlear testing may be performed at times such as Tinnitus Pitch Matching, Minimum Masking Levels (MML),Uncomfortable Loudness Levels (UCL), Weber, Sisi, Stenger, Tone Decay Tests, or diagnostic speech tests like Ling 6, Quick SIN, and Speech Roll Over Tests, depending on your results and clinical needs.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is also performed if clinically warranted to rule out retro cochlear pathology such as acoustic neuroma.   There must be a significant sensorineural hearing asymmetry (difference between the right and left ears.  Protocol is to test if there is a hearing  asymmetry at 2 frequencies of 15  dB. or more.  Alternatively one frequency with a  larger asymmetry of 20 dB or more or more would also be investigated and reported).

Medicare Items may include (82318 or 82315, 82324, 82300, 82332, 82306)

Reports are generally completed and sent via our password protected email or fax within 7 days.

Adult Hearing Test Standard

Adult Hearing Test Standard (5 years and older) Allow 30-60 Mins. Bulk Billed with GP Referral.

Bulk Billed with GP referral.  Service costs $150 with no referral.

Testing is conducted using state of the art equipment in a soundproof booth.  Frequencies tested 250 Hz to 8000 Hz.

Testing includes Otoscopy, Air Conduction (Speech Range only 250Hz to 8000 Hz), Bone Conduction, Speech Testing with AB Words, Tympanometry and Ipsilateral Reflexes to assess Middle Ear Function, and Otoacoustic emissions  (DPOAE's) to examine the auditory system in more detail .    A Report will be faxed or emailed with password protection the referring GP or Specialist.

A Diagnostic Hearing Test  allows the Audiologist to differentiate between true Hearing Losses (Sensorineural) where hearing aids may be recommended, and Mechanical Hearing Losses (Conductive), which may have medical or surgical treatments.  The Comprehensive Hearing Test Battery provides even more information.

The Free Hearing Screen that many companies do is only to give you a rough idea to see if you need further assistance.  It only generally includes Air Conduction just one small part of the bundle of tests and, as such, are not suitable for Medical, License, CASA, Workcover, Pre-Employment or Tinnitus Testing and Evaluation.  Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialists will nearly always require at least a standard Adult Hearing Test or they generally rebook the patient, who has to pay twice.  It's therefore important to have a proper Hearing Assessment by a qualified Audiologist, in a sound proof room for best results.

Medicare Items may include (82318 or 82315, 82324, 82332)

Employment Hearing Tests & Monitoring. Can't Bulk Bill

Employment Hearing Tests & Monitoring. Allow 30 mins. Cost is $150

Hearing testing is conducted by a Masters Qualified Audiologist using the MEDRX AWRC Audiometer in a soundproof booth.  The pitches across the speech range from 250 Hz to 8000 Hz including mid octaves are generally required by employers and GP practices.

Hearing requirements may vary across different professions and even across companies, so please bring any paper work with you to the appointment so we know exactly the information that they require.

Bundaberg Hearing Aids and Tinnitus Treatment Clinic is open some Saturdays.  Bulk testing can be arranged all in a single day with a minimum of 10 people.

This testing is suitable for Pre-employment medicals, Heavy Truck license hearing tests, CASA hearing tests and ongoing hearing monitoring for those that work in loud environments. This is now required by law in Queensland via modifications made  to the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 from 29 July 2025.  This applies to all workplaces with loud noise levels which exceed exposure standards and require hearing protection. New workers must be tested by law within 3 months and follow up tests conducted every 2 years.  For clients with hearing aids - aided threshold (using the hearing aids) testing can be performed through the free field, so the safety and efficacy of your Aided Hearing can be established.

Given that requirements are stricter now for Hearing Monitoring in QLD many GP practices will send the client to an Audiology Clinic such as ours https://bundaberghearingaids.net.au/ to ensure that a suitably qualified audiologist is testing in a sound proof environment to meet all the requirements of the legislation.  We have a good relationship with the the staff at Burnett Medical, who offer a range of Pre-employment services https://burnettmedical.com.au/services/employment-medicals/

and we are one of their partners to perform the Hearing Testing component for the Pre-employment testing and endeavour to get your results back to the GP or Employer as fast as possible.  If you require it the same day please advise when you make the appointment.

Many companies have slightly different testing requirements so please bring any paper work to your appointment.  If your employer is paying for the test we will need notification from them in writing or email prior to sending your results, so it is best to organise this before the appointment.    It is more common for the client to have to pay for this, and get reimbursed if they get the position.  No Medicare rebate or bulk billing is available for Pre employment testing under Medicare regulations.

Hearing Testing for Children before they can reliably respond around age 5 requires specialised equipment, a good attitude, and a bit of luck on the day.  This testing is sensitive to sound, movement, and ABR to mobile phone interference.  Testing the younger children if they are tired or asleep can be easier.   The Test Battery that we use within Bundaberg Hearing Aids and Tinnitus Treatment Clinic includes Oto-Acoustic Emissions (OAE) to measure outer hair cell function, Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), where brainwaves latencies (timing), shape, and difference between the ears, are measured to get an estimate of hearing ability.  We also use Tympanometry to rule out any middle ear pathology such as Glue Ear  or perforations (holes) in the ear drum which could confound the results.  We will often try and get part of the Adult Hearing Test as well but this depends on the child's age and ability on the day,  The results are explained on the day by the Audiologist, and a report sent to the referring  GP or Specialist...   None of the above testing can be performed with a crying child so we try and support a relaxed environment for them but it does depend on how they are feeling on the day of course as to how much of the testing we can complete.  If the Child Hearing Test  can't be continued we will retry the testing, in the future again depending on the parent's wishes and urgency for the results.   If there is a hearing loss all children and young adults with confirmed hearing loss are entitled to services subsidised by the Federal Government Hearing Services Program until they turn 26 years old.  These services may include Hearing Aids, FM systems, counselling and more from Hearing Australia.

Here is a link to those services.  This will take you to the Hearing Australia Website with who we are not affiliated.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) for Infant Hearing Testing

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). Allow 30-60 mins. Bulk Billed with GP referral

ABR Hearing Test can be used for threshold estimation of infants (when used with OAE testing), Site of Lesion Testing, and to rule out Auditory Neuropathy as part of Auditory processing test battery.

Bulk Billed with GP referral.  ABR costs $200 with no referral.

ABR Hearing Estimation

ABR tests how the nerve and brainstem pathways for hearing are working and can estimate hearing for infant hearing testing and sometime on good natured non-verbal Adults.  This Test is included in the Auditory Processing Assessment and Infant Hearing under 5 years old Test Battery.   Please see those tests for costs involved.

ABR Site of Lesion Test

While MRI is the gold standard for site of lesion testing and Acoustic Neuroma testing, ABR, is still a fairly sensitive test for Tumours over 1 cm large and for patients who aren't able to have an MRI for various reasons.

ABR in Auditory Processing Testing to rule out Auditory Neuropathy

Auditory Neuropathy is a hearing disorder in which the inner ear can detect sound but has issues sending it from the ear to the brain.  (This is part of Bundaberg Hearing Aids and Tinnitus Treatment Clinic's Auditory Processing Battery).

It can affect all ages from infancy to adulthood.    Genetic risk factors and issues during pregnancy and birth increase it incidence.

The Hearing levels of afflicted patients with Auditory Neuropathy can range from normal to severe.   Very poor speech discrimination scores during hearing testing by qualified Audiologists is generally present, and self-reported issues with speech clarity are common.

Bulk Billed with GP referral.  Can be run as part of the Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Testing Battery or stand alone.  Service costs  $100 with no referral.

A Recent Speech in Noise Test available is the Auditory Contrast Test (ACT).   Allow 30 mins. It can be tested alone or as part of the Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Test Protocol.  The Auditory Contrast Test is a well researched Speech in Noise Test.

Problems hearing in background noise and groups is one of the most common concerns with even mild hearing loss.  The ACT measures the hearing ability in noisy situations.  It is performed under headphones with sound that is modified to maximise audibility across the person's hearing.  It is not language dependent unlike many older tests and may assist the Audiologist in selecting the right level of Technology and/or more information to adjust and fine tune patients Hearing Aids.  The Interacoustics  2025 White Paper states that the test is strongly related to valid speech outcomes in Aided Hearing-Impaired Listeners and can even predict the benefit of speech in noise reduction.

Hearing Screening with the Sound Scouts APP

Sound Scouts Hearing Screening APP around $35 per person screened

The National Acoustic Laboratories in conjunction with Carolyn Mee, Founder & CEO developed Sound Scouts Hearing Screening APP.  While the download is free it costs around $35 per test to use.  There are bulk options for places like community centres and schools.   It can be downloaded in formats to suit Google, Apple, and Microsoft.  It does require a decent set of headphones.  Sound Scouts recommends the Sennheiser HD 400 .  I personally use the Audera headphones, which can be seen in our shop section.  These work well but the Sennheiser is a much more economical option.   It's important to turn off any bass or treble boosts and any noise reduction on headphones prior to testing.

It is suitable as a screening tool for children but adults could also use it.  The Nine News video with  Carolyn Mee, Founder & CEOs to the right.  Sound Scouts incorporates a hearing screening, in the format of a fun game.  In addition to this it will provides an instant report and recommendations for next steps if the test is failed.

I'm receive no financial incentive from NAL or Sound Scouts - I just like its simplicity and gamification.  It's a useful option for schools or for parents with children that live a distance from any services.
