Service includes Ear wax removal via Micro suction using a Head Light, and Tympanometry if GP referred to rule out any middle ear pathology. Unfortunately there is no Medicare code available to Audiologists for the ear wax removal. If GP referred a test of the middle ear function, tympanometry is also performed and charged at an additional $15.90. This amount ($15.90) can be claimed back from Medicare.
If you are on a GP Care Plan for a chronic condition your GP may be able to select Audiologist as a visit to cover this test as one of the 5 free appointments available to you, We give Pensioners a 50% discount on our private fee for ear wax removal.
Unless you have a hole in your Ear Drum (Perforation) using a wax softening agent like Waxol or Cerumol gives your Audiologist a better chance for removal. I would recommend a minimum of 3 days morning and night. Please note this will lead to the wax moving into a softer form and may cause additional temporary hearing impairment until it is removed.
Its normal and healthy for the ear to produce ear wax. This helps the ear canal to protect from water and infection. If it's causing you or your Hearing Aids any problems, we can generally remove via micro suction (no water) or manual curets.
Impacted Wax is a common issue, particularly if you wear hearing aids like I do, as insertion of the hearing aids pushes the wax a bit further in, every single day, While super annoying, wax impaction generally isn't a medical emergency. We understand that it can be uncomfortable and will try and get you in as soon as we are able. Please bear in mind to see an ENT specialist for the same procedure can take weeks to months for an appointment. Please be assured we will see see at as soon as we possibly can but waitlists can be a couple of weeks long.
Some common symptoms of an ear blocked by wax include:
Temporary Hearing Loss
Tinnitus
Ear Pain
Poor outcomes for Hearing Aid users as the tubing and mic ports get clogged up
Balance Issues
Poor Localisation (ability to tell where sounds are coming from)
The Microsuction Ear Wax Removal technique involves a small machine like a tiny vacuum cleaner, which sucks the wax out , without using water like in Irrigation techniques, and is generally considered to be the safter of the 2 common methods used and conveniently located for you in Bundaberg West.
It can be a little bit uncomfortable but generally isn't painful. The procedure is however very loud..
If you arrive and your ears are clear of wax we do do not charge unlike other providers in town. If you feel that the hearing has been impacted we may recommend that you apply for a voucher (pensioners), or get a GP referral for hearing testing.
