Must be 7 years or older as research has shown that testing children under this age his unreliable. People with Auditory Processing and or Auditory Neuropathy may display many of the symptoms of hearing loss even if they have normal hearing. This may show up as educational or behavioural difficulties at home or school. They may struggle hearing in groups or background noise, following more than 1 instruction at a time, being able to pick what direction sound has come from, and have difficulty staying on task even though they have normal functional hearing. Tinnitus is a subjective noise in the ears or head that can't be heard by others.
Proper testing to rule out medical causes for the tinnitus is particularly important for new, single sided, or pulsatile (in sync with your heart) Tinnitus, as it may occasionally be a warning sign of more serious medical conditions.
Many things can make tinnitus worse, and a test will include recommendations from your Audiologist for treatment and management as well as looking at any specific triggers in your case history and results.
There is no total cure for tinnitus but across time we can teach our brains to not pay it much attention through a number of avenues.
